I probably won’t find any emails there on my own because I never check there. So, if you want me to read an email sent to the above address, tell me in the comment below that you’ve sent one and then I will look for it.
Since I know you personally liked our photos from before I thought you would like the shoot I did recently.

Just so I don’t come off as trying to promote myself on your website. That is not my intension. I just know you personally enjoyed the photos so I thought I would send them your way.
Hope you are doing well. I still keep up from time to time <3
I love those photos Avianna! I think you look even more like Diana than before! I especially love the kitchen setting: I can easily believe it to be the orphanage kitchen!
You can promote Rule of Rose cosplay on my blog whenever you like.
I changed the wig, I think it helped alot.
This is completely off-topic, but seeing there’s no “general discussion” forum or such… Sorry for the inconvenience!
I just like to point out that, the link to “Japanese Sites” “Rhapsody of Rose” has moved to this domain (temporarily, as they say):
http://www.geocities.jp/roadrunner0369/ruleofrose/main.html
One thing I’ve notice in that page, is an analysis of one of the official wallpaper:
http://www.jp.playstation.com/scej/title/ror/img_wall/blackboard02a.jpg
Their main focus is the small text near the bottom. This seems to provide a very interesting time-line (such as the exact time of Hoffman and Clara’s missing). However the original English (or should I say, Engrish) text is extremely poorly written (seems to me a poor attempt to translate Japanese into English, probably using an automatic tool such as babelfish). Have you noticed, or talked about that part in the past? If not, I can help translate their Japanese translation back to proper English (woosh).
Dimitry_Clover,

I haven’t really been much involved in the discussion as I am not confident that there is any meaningful information in these odd notes.
Is there ever any use of the hidden door in the club’s hallway? When you go out the professor’s bedroom door and continue straight while on the blimp, there is a door at the end of the hall on the right. What is that for? And was Jennifer a girl or boy? I’ve heard it several ways (tranny, crossdress as a kid, had “it” cut off) but i cant figure out what is really going on there
Hi
I really find this site interesting, and thank you for it. Even though i follow the happennings here for long, i didn’t tryed to ask yet for different reasons.
The things i have always wonder are few, and i deeply apologise if they have been answered somewhere i couldn’t find.
First, the sledgehammer.
I hardly believe i was the only one to find this weapon ? I never saw it’s name in any list.
If i remember correctly, since i didn’t played for long, it was the last chapter before the orphanage, (rag princess i think so) in one of the few reactor area (down the ladders). Only there, an imp throw the hammer at you, and crawl back under the motor, disappearring. you can then pick it up, and it’s quite powerful. the dexcription says “sledgehammer, one swing will break most objects”.
Forgive me if i’m really not accurate enough, i didn’t played in a really long time.
The second thing is something i never could find anywhere. What is the thing we can find with the bullet ? how hard i tryed, i never found anything except other bullets. SO what are the ???? referring to ?
Thank you if you believe me, more if you can help me to figure this last thing, it’s quite a tickling mistery to me.
i wish you nice holidays.
Welcome Lussh!

Perhaps the thing that can be found with the bullet is the gun (just as vice versa)?
Hi
Thank you, i knew it would have been found already.
However for the gun, i don’t thin so, when we find an item, all the items that could find it do list it as a possibility, it doesn’t happen for the bullet, since it would have written revolver, or so i believe.
Thank you for your quick answer altough : )
Just finished the game and found this site while looking for more information. This is really great, thank you for all the work you put into this site, it’s a great resource. I hope that there is another game like it some day!
I just posted my own review of the game on a message board that I frequent. I think you might like it:
http://boards.cityofheroes.com//showthread.php?t=203744
Welcome, Westley!
I hope your review will bring about much more interest in Rule of Rose among the “right sort” of game-player (of which you seem to be one yourself).
The only thing missing was a link to this site for when they finish!
Enjoy the mysteries!
Hi
I have two litle things for today, one to ask, the other to tell.
To ask, in the little room of the attic, the one where the revolver was hidden, there is something written on the wall, i couldn’t understand any of it, even with a japanese translator (as i could roughly read japaneses sounds)
so what is it ? if you know
the other thing, is about the item the bullet can lead to.
I had a hunch, i verified just know, when we have gregory’s gun, it’s what is listed. Find the meanings you want there : )
Good day
Lussh, see my blog-post: Japanese Names in the Orphanage.
Thank you very much, you are wonderful.
Hello PokerNemesis,
For a long time now, I’ve been following your blog and lately, your videos on YouTube.
I’m replaying Rule of Rose for the second time and i got to the Sir Peter chapter when i noticed something. I was searching around for special items before i actually set out to find Amanda on the top of the airship, when i asked Brown to find the item “candy”. (we were in the area where all the aristocrats spend the most time, mind you.) He went to find it and it led to the Sick Bay. There, i tried opening up the down but it was locked and suddenly, some muffled noises came out of there sounding like Hoffman. It then goes to a cut scene where Jennifer can look through the key-hole and see the imps around Hoffman who is in a tied-up position. At first, it startled me because i couldn’t remember seeing this before. Then i realized that this was before the boss battle and it was showing how Hoffman got to be the way he was at that time.
I went through your posts to see if you had anything that was remotely close to this but i couldn’t find any so I’m alerting you of this you might be able to analyze it better than me.
Sincerely,
Bridget
Welcome, Bridget!

okay! thank you! i couldn’t find it to save my life.
No problem, Bridget. There are a lot of blog-posts to search through nowadays.
Hi, I just sent you an email asking for a book recommendation of anything alike Rule of Rose.
Hello!
First off, love the site. Secondly, I wanted to bring up something interested i stumbled upon off Wikipedia… apparently, there is a myth of a bluebird of happiness. (Info here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bluebird_of_happiness)
“The mythology of the bluebird of happiness has deep roots that go back thousands of years. Indigenous cultures across the globe hold similar myths and beliefs about the bluebird. It is a widely accepted symbol of cheerfulness, happiness, prosperity, hearth and home, good health, new births, the renewal of springtime, etc. Virtually any positive sentiments may be attached to the bluebird.
In magical symbology, bluebirds are used to represent confidence in the positive aspect and egotism in the negative. A dead bluebird is a symbol of disillusionment, of the loss of innocence, and of transformation from the younger and naive to the older and wiser.”
Consider the bird of happiness chapter, and in particular, that last bit about a a dead bird, symbolizing disillusionment, the loss of innocence, and the transformation from the younger and the naive to the older and wiser. I just found that interesting, while unrelated.
Welcome, Sheva!
Thanks for the information!

Tommorrow you will receive your gift. I hope it will worth a crayon.
Hi, does anyone know about any books that influented or were influented by Role of Rose? I’ve been meaning to find it’s literary equivalent.
I don’t know about any books, but there may be films. See my blog-posts:

Hello Hello.
PokerNemesis, my gift is complete ! (i’m happy)
it took less than a month and a fifty hours play game, but here are the results.
I made complete maps of the airship (lower, upper, central), the orphanage, the gingerbread jouse and strange hill.
On each, i wrote where was every item.
(the lower deck map is 193 centimeters tall on paper)
You’ll find that on the lists of names and items, there are english and french, that’s just because i am, and some funny things occured. I’ll tell about it after giving you thoses maps.
On megaupload ( because servimg.com couldn’t take pictures of 100mg.bmp) i opened an account just for you.
http://www.megaupload.com/?f=GHIGAL0E
beware, there are two pages.
The numbers 0 refers to high res bmp of the maps, as scanned and put together.
1 for .jpg ; 2 for sepia like and 4 for somekind of reverse color in deep red, i find it pretty and easyer to read on screen. (if i have to print i would mostly not choose that one).
If you are not a megaupload funky-junky, i even opened an account on deviant art so you can take them.
http://kangeis.deviantart.com/gallery/#_browse
There are only the deep reds ones, but i can put the white ones too if you want.
Everyone is invited to steal the maps, print them and decorate their bedrooms, kitchens, stairways, or sewage treatment room with it ! or just keeping them reachable when playing.
As i told the first time here, when i was wondering about the item the bullet may find and the sledgehammer not being in the item list, i knew this site since a long time (and being in my favorites) but couldn’t think about anything usefull to give. The most interesting theories (proven mostly) where already thought of and wrote, i felt somehow guilty, because for a so wonderful master work as this game, i could do nothing.
But i thought, and what i did to obscure, i could do it again in Rule of Rose ? The maps were quite logical, and the items harder to find. So i did. Using my old items lists (not yours sorry) and a lot of paper, i did.
The funny stuff now. All the things i encountered during this.
The mostly (un)funny was between the sector 1 and 2. When you are on the end of sector 2, the two walkay are four meters away one of each other, but when you cross on sector 1, they are only two meters away from each other.
That’s why you’ll see the biggest difference there on the map, i kept the four metter distance.
(I had some funny things like that in obscure too, like room with two windows from outside, and three from inside, or doors changing side)
The second most funny one comes from the french translation of the game. The upper deck men’s lavatory are translated as WC femmes, wich means women’s lavatory.
There is also the funny door to the radio room, there is wall on left inside, but not outside.
I had some funny stuff like throwing away the rough before drawing the final version ; and had to do some stretch to make the lifts and stairway fit together. For example, the gap between the central stairway C and D is not so long, but i had to, otherwise the loft wouldn’t fit together.
The aristocrat room on the upper deck has been stretched too for the same reason ( the stairways ). And i think it is interesting to notice that when you are in this room, you have no map or name. It’s nowhere ? It’s memory after all.
The codes for eleanor bird box are written in the near wall. i know you don’t see that wall in the in game map, it appeared because i made the rooms a little bigger than they really are.
The strange hill and the gingerbread house were the easy parts as you can guess.
The orphanage map wasn’t quite hard, exept for the attic, wich seriously took me time and smiles.
the storage (41) is really bigger than it should be, but it would have look too strange, and same for the (38), the prince and princess quarters.
it was intended first that i draw the different versions we encounter of the salon and the classroom, but it flew away like a butterfly. For the same reason, the knight and bin of the salon and vip room are listed with their month but not drawn on the map.
The list of things i thought off in random : The smoking room becoming more and more messy is becoming the play area, somehow the filth room too changes that way.
I first wonder if the filth room of the airship was not meant to reflect the filth room of the orphanage but the rickety shed. I don’t think anymore, but it’s maybe interesting to note that both jennifer and brown where tide up at a central pillar.
Sector 7 cargo bay remind of the classroom, but the black board is near the heatting. It also remind of the big attic storage (40), an area in game we can visit once, and find nothing. The sector 14 also remind of it.
of course, working class luggage is sewing room, middle class luggage seem to be the cell of remorse, and the aristocrat luggage ?
The port livestock room would be the fence road, left of the orphanage, where the cages are.
For some reason i can’t really explain, the starboard livestock room remind me of the balcony.
In the sick room, the drawings are nearly where the windows are in the orphanage version. Also, it semt too logical because it’s an airship to be told, but i believe the fact that nearly every room lose it’s windows tighten up the claustrophobia. There is truly no escape, jennifer is still in the orphanage, but she can’t see any window anymore, except in the sick room where they are thoses drawings, from wendy.
I didn’t wrote all the orphans names on the numbered room, only the ones i was sure about.
During the funeral part, sorry, i didn’t read what you could have written about it, so i’ll probably repeat something.
The pigs are amanda, obviously, and the gluttonous prince, (in the hall), i don’t remember if it’s xavier, leo, thomas, or else.
The rats are olivia, with a meat cleaver, and diana wich wields the basement axe. (At first i thought diana would be fish, but here, she’s a rat ? i wondered why. And then i thought about the attitude of the rat, sniffing everything, and i thought it could be a metaphoric cry and tears attitude. Jennifer saw both of them crying.)
The goats are margaret and the other boy in the hall (wielding a scythe ??) The others become random imps.
There i just forgot i didn’t checkl on the balcony to see what eleanor looked like.
Also, i truly hate the dragons. The big things in the central stairway during the bird of happiness and in the classroom during funeral ; what the hell are they supposed to be ?
Also, and i couldn’t find any theory for it, during daytime, only one restroom is open, on the second floor, also, washouse and shower are closed. But during night, they all open, and all contains one can of dog food. It’s quite a lot of dog food, and why there always ?
And to get over, a creepy theory. (it has very little logic i reassure you)
Jennifer did found the gun, and that’s why she’s called thief by one of the paper ball. And each of the bullet she find is an empty shell of bullet she used to kill everyone. xavier in the play area, amanda in the sewing room, martha in her room, clara in the sick bay, hoffman in the classroom, brown in the inner court, meg in the cell of repentance, et cetera, wendy in the sickroom. Finally, with the last bullet, gregory killed himself and was latter thought as being the murderer of everyone. yay happy ending. Sorry, i just began to think wierdly when collecting the bullet (23 +1 in the gun, makes enough to kill a lot of puppies).
Libra is found in the Library, Aquarius in the sewage treatment, Pisces in the aquarium room, Capricorn in the goat room, gemini in the sick room . . .
If it hasn’t been done yet, there is a little symbolism for each disc location.
That’s enough writting for now, i can hardly breath.
To conclude, i hope you will enjoy the gift poker, and everyone else. It was quite a work, I really hope it will be used and apreciated.
Merci beaucoup, Lussh!
I have everything (22 files) downloaded from Megaupload now. They look like very wonderful maps! I’m looking forward to finding many fun and useful ways to make use of them. They are wonderful gifts! A big fat red crayon (as well as “hats off!”) for you!
It may take me a little bit of thought to figure out how best to make them available for my readers to view directly online, as they are so large, but I intend to set that up. Parts of the maps may also make their way into my videos.
I intend to comment, bit by bit, on what you’ve written above.
By the way, are the locations of the broken robots (“Rag Princess Sews” chapter) somewhere on your maps? I’ve been thinking of showing, on a video, where they can be found, as they unlock a costume, but skimming over the maps I haven’t found any mention of them yet.
Lussh, comments with links tend to get caught by my spam filter, and that’s what happened to you. Sorry, but the spam filter is very necessary. I get a terrible amount of spam now… so much spam that every day the filter catches about 4 very long pages of it. It has become very tedious to skim over it all every day to see if some legitimate comment has gotten snagged. Recently, I began to sometimes take a chance and delete it all unchecked… especially if I have put off checking it for a couple of days and the backlog is huge. I don’t like doing that, but the spam problem has really become a time-waster.

Although Diana wears, over her head, a sack with a fish drawn on it (during the scene at the coffin at the end of “The Little Princess” chapter), she also wears a sack with a rat drawn on it (at the beginning of that chapter as she beats on a bloody bag with a stick). Her rat aspect may relate to her having the role of keeper of the rat-stick. Diana seems to be the one who in each case provides the rat-stick for the hazings of Jennifer and Amanda.

There is a bird imp there.
Hello hello
I’m really, really, glad you enjoy it.
The broken robots are indeed on the map, but with no special writting, they look like other items.
south west corner in central stairway B,
nort east in C, far south in D and north of sector 13 lift.
the objects i didn’t wrote are the storybooks, maybe some story related items and some of the weapons the imps are carying. i wrote some but not all ; the imps with lolipop and shortbread as weapon in november aren’t on the map.
Thanks for the information about diana, i didn’t noticed the second head bag ; and didn’t thought about the rat stick. I also thought there could be a connection between the two kids who share the same look during november, and thought about the cries.
Also about the dragons, i solely mean the ones that are a little bigger than the standard bird imp and far more powerful, with some spikes on them. As they have spikes and their head don’t remind me much of a bird, (and they truly freak me out with their third life gone by hit) that’s why they’ll stay dragons to me ^^ It’s like having litles blue birds and giant (scary)crows.
Thank you again for appreciating the gift, and earning my very own red crayon : )

Hello PokerNemesis,
I would like to say that I really love this site and you youtube and I want to share a theroy I have about Diana.
Originaly I was a member of a forum fan site called the FilthRoom and it was kind of an on going joke that Diana was a cutter. But then I really thought about it, and I believe it was a possiblity. Seeing that she’s got a bandaid on her inner thigh I was thinking that she cut herself near her female regins to signify her having her period, and that’s why she would flash her bandaid to the other girls. Showing that she was more of a woman then the other girls and that’s why she was basically in charge. And I remember something jennifer said in the basement of the extra chapter. When next to a chair in the middle of the room she said something about Diana trying to be more of an adult then everyone else or that she was trying to grow up fast, or something like that. (sorry it’s been awhile since i played).
anyways let me know what you think.
Oh wow, I started a trend!
Anyway, we got more pictures at the last con and we added a few characters.

Great pics, Avianna!
I’d love to put that link in its own blog-post here (so people will find it better) if you tell me the names of the cosplayers.
Would it be O.K. to put one picture up for a lead-in to the link/post?
Sure, you can put one picture.
Cosplayers are:
Leesers – Jennifer
Wendy – Miri
Diana – Avianna (Me)
Meg – Bonk
Eleanor – Straywind
Joshua – Devious_Tofu
Photographer – Elemental
We hope to have a Stray Dog and an Amanda next time… whenever that will be
I was just going through the first part of the game again, and I had a thought.
What if Jennifer is in an asylum right now, during the game, and this is all a hallucination or something. Using this, the Joshua who first talks to her when she’s tied up says “this is your life but you play by my rules”. Little Jennifer pretended to be Joshua for a while, so what if this Joshua is almost like split personality leading her through her insanity after what she witnessed…
now the last vision of Joshua where it turns out to be Wendy was probably reliving the past a bit, but I just thought it was a cool thought that not only was Jennifer going through her memories, but also fighting her own insanity.
To Saffity ;
As i like to say, Rule of Rose is my favorite of all Silent hill. The idea of playing a character in a world based on reality but alterated by the memories (oftenly refused and forgotten because traumatics) and the person mind, uncounsciously, is the common, and wonderful, line between them. Silent hills are more violent then, when rule of rose uses poetry.
Because of the main line ; a traumatic, somehow forgotten past, and the game where reality and imaginary (reliving the past, and all the emotions it carried, symbolised a way or another) are so mixed we’re not sure wich is what ; it can always be very well interpreted as a delirium, therefor a psychiatric hospital cell is quite plausible for poor jennifer real location. (except if there was an alessa before amanda in the orphanage)
Also split personality, because they are the most impressive and somehow easy symptom of trauma and mental disease to put on cinema, the reality about is more subtle, but can still be true where you said so.
In fact, the cases of multiple entitys not aware of each other in a same person are really really rare, and most of those rare cases, they are far more than just two or three.
But at the most common and lower extent of trauma, when someone got an awfull trauma, The PTSD can also be interpretated as a split, in the mind. (not really persona) To protect, the person put all the horror in a single basket of mind, and toss it as far as possible, try to forgot and manage it like that. It saves lives, but after, the basket is like a spli personality, it’s a lot of pain, suffering, and memorys, that, upon special occasion ; “triggers”, will come back eventually, and again and again, until a real psychological work is done, and the two “splits” are united again.
So, in a form, every trauma leading to ptsd can be interpreted as splitting personality, it’s a split, a piece of the person that disconnected, and it’s the demon born through the trauma ; but even if it looks different, it’s still the same person. Acceptance of them is always hard. But even if they only seem to seek for destruction, that the only thing “they” want.
Well it was long ; the goal was to say that, wherever jennifer was ; in a mental hospital, or half alseep in a bus, it’s , in my opinion, a perfectly coorect assumption that a “split” personality appeared, as this boy, to make her run, toward acceptance. Also in this case, don’t we see a butterfly flying near a light ? It’s maybe more than a mood. A “split” strange little boy that lead her is a quite good thought. After all, we know it’s wendy at the end, but it does’nt really mean it Was wendy since the start. (well what she says at the end does pretty much, but this “present” wendy can be a lot of thing)
Also, about split personality, since we have joshua-jennifer and joshua-wendy, when all past memory has been obliterated because of a huge trauma, it wouldn’t surprise me to discover some “mistakes” at first. At the end, it could also have been a young jennifer taking off the wig, it wouldn’t had change a lot the story.
“because you led to this. because you choose to forgot all of us, i brought you here. but i, i. . . Now only you and your so beloved dog can defeat him.”
PokerNemesis! I sent you a very important, time-intensive e-mail just now. Please respond as quickly as possible. Thank you.
I’ve sent a reply to you, Alison S.
Hello again, PokerNemesis!
I just popped round here to share something, as I’ve seen quite a few people do it already.
I’ve recently studied more about a thing called The Stone-Wall Theory in the realm of the paranormal. This theory suggests that memories, events, experiences and emotions can be imprinted inside a room or other physical thing like a building. At a later point in history, they can replay themselves continually and re-enact what happened in the past, and it is, supposedly, a different form of ghostly apparitions. This got me thinking about Rule of Rose…
When I first played the game (before I discovered this website), I thought that the entire thing was physical and happening right now. For example, when Jennifer was on the airship, in her mind she was viewing things as an airship, but in reality she was wandering around the abandoned orphanage on the same night as the beginning of the game, with nobody else there but her. Like a hallucination almost. When I read about The Stone-Wall Theory, I thought that this could, perhaps, explain a few things about this.
For example, in The Funeral chapter, Jennifer returns to the orphanage and is made to feel isolated and alone by the other orphans for stealing Joshua the Bear, even though she didn’t do it. What if The Stone-Wall Theory came into place here, and the orphanage held onto those memories, events and emotions and replayed them, with Jennifer being there to trigger it?
I just thought I’d share this with you, I found it pretty interesting myself.
Hello cheerful prince
I do find it interesting too. With a slightly thing to note being that the rooms having windows in the orphanage don’t have them in the airship. So, if you place thoses “alternate” versions together to build up the orphanage, you have it, but incredibly closed and sealed off. Like it was closing up, gobling up jennifer entirely, with no possible escape, or even looking outside (with rare exeptions, the vip room still has a “window”, the cafeteria and few corridors too, but they only show sky, no escape).
I share the idea that jennifer is still in the abandonned orphanage, and same night, from the beginning of the game till the end. And while at first she hears children voices, and feel like being obsserved, “but, she was all alone.” But then, as we see the orphanage as the aircraft, like i just said, we have a view of something really really closed. So either it’s her memory, and she once felt like there was no window, or it’s something else that want to make sure she don’t see them anymore. Well it’s not exactly what you implied about the memory of objects, but i like it too. Also, i think it can be pushed a litle further with the items we find in game, and their meaning so, if she might find them in the abandonned orphanage at night. Because, she finds at least. . . a shovel in the inner courtyard, and probably some “animal bones” in the coffin. Thoses are unleashing a lot. During what happens in the “airship”, when she fin the bird and the mermaid, and well, each timpe she finds the gift of the month, some memory comes back, showing the orphanage of the past time. (with “less” inaccuracy but some still).
As last thing, i think the paranormal power of being able to read the memory of places and objects is called psychometry.
Hello PokerNemesis! (Sorry my bad English)
I’m sure everyone including YOU have already noticed this, but anyway…
Recently I’ve watched the movie “Captivity (2007)”. In one particular scene, it called my attention because…
The protagonist – called Jennifer – is being threatened by the kidnapper on choosing in 30 seconds who is going to be killed: her or her dog… Well, under this almost unbearable pressure, she choosed the dog…
Well, thanks once again for this site and supporting!
I wasn’t aware of that movie. Thanks for pointing it out, Mr. Trouble.
Everybody!
