This writing is located on Gregory’s desktop.
I think it says “Emma Wilson” at the top of the page. Does anyone else think so? It is easier to make out the “W” of Wilson if you realize that the “W” is written with the middle lines not coming to a point at the top but rather crossing each other.
Can anyone make out any of the rest of what is written? It would be great if this provided a clue as to why Gregory’s wife is not around.
Can anyone with an emulator manage to get a clearer photo of this?

UPDATE!
Comment-maker Zen Maiton found a clearer (and shorter, and reversed) version of this writing on one of the desks of Hoffman (found in the Headmaster’s Quarters), the desk which has a phonograph and the P. A. equipment on it. The first letter of the last name can be clearly seen to be an “M”, and not a “W” as I previously thought, so the name cannot be Emma Wilson.
It is probably about a woman named Emma, not married to Gregory, who was two-timing Gregory for Mr. Hoffman!
I’m just kidding with the two-timing statement above.
It seems likely to me now that it is just a meaningless generic example of writing repeated several times in the game to minimize labor and expense for the game-makers (something seen before with wall cracks, etc.)
Thanks, Zen Maiton! Good job!!!

I will try to get a clear picture of this! Maybe today!
I have to replay the game from the beginning, because it doesn’t allow me to turn off the “noir filter” in-game. This allow for a much clearer picture. But I will probably post a HD picture today if no one beats me to it
I couldn’t find a much better picture than the one you posted. But, this same page can also be found in the pile of trash near the basement door along with the usual books and cigarette packs.

Here, I have uploaded a HD picture of Gregory’s Desk if you want to toy around with it:) Better use “save as… because it’s a very large file.

If someone could come up with a way to extract 3D textures from this game, that would be awesome!
Hey, I’m just posting to say that I’m thrilled this site is still running and going strong! I love this game and the incredible depth in the world creation and symbolism. I’m so glad this site exists! Is there any way to get emails when new posts come up?
A trace of Gregory’s wife could have been a very nice discovery! That’s a shame it didn’t turned as well
However in the second picture that Bryan posted, there’s something that catch my attention. You might call me a pervert but… I am the only one who see a naked man on the highest picture on the desk?
Next to the « strange light » you can see his head, then his torso and nipples. If you continue to go down you can see his genitals and legs. What a strange thing to see ! XD

@ Pegee. Yes, it does sort of look like that.
That one with the naked dude is soooo weird!! O_o What does that mean?? Why did the DEVS put that thing’s there?!
The picture seems to remind me something straight out of Adam and Eve, or some mythological tale. Maybe it could be a sign of symbolism or maybe Gregory believed in a certain religion or theology?
Oh gods, I never noticed that photo before. O_o!!
I dont think Mr.Hoffman has anything to do with the mysterious woman “w” of course, probly you mistaken the “m” for martha not the mysterious woman >_> all i know is mr. gregory killed his wife cause he went insane after the death of his son
Deathps –
How can you know that Gregory killed his wife? We dont have a single clue if he ever did have a wife or a girl friend… Even the picture of him and young Joshua doesn’t show any sign of a woman.
Pegee wrote:
Although there IS the question of who it was that took the photo. o_0
And there is the question of the significance of this (below) in Gregory’s house: Could it be a photo of Joshua and his mother?
(not to imply that I support Deathps plot speculation)
~
Yeah, thats a possibility. But its look to me far too old and « more than vintage » to be the picture of Joshua and his mother. However, in that fashion, it could also be Gregory and his mother or Mary and baby Jesus.
the odd junk scattered throughout the game adds to my disapproval of how RoR was thrown together. In Parasite Eve ( my favorite game ) the image of a penis was all over various areas of the museum. That was a crazy idea. RoR has all manner of red herrings…. not mysteries, just bad ideas.
I think it says “Emma Moore”
I agree with Pegee. My first impression of that photo that PokerNemesis posted was that it resembles an idol image of Mother Mary and Baby Jesus. I’m not really sure if any branch of Christianity was prominent in England during this time period though. But that’s what I think it looks like.
The clothing of the woman seems to be blue and gold, which is what Mary is mostly depicted as wearing. It also seems like there’s a yellow aura surrounding the woman and child that is more dominant around their heads, much like how most interpretations of Mary and Jesus have solid gold or yellow outlines around their heads to represent halos. The background is also very cloud-like, another feature of many images of Mary/Jesus. It also looks like the woman is wearing a crown. Some drawings of Mary feature such crowns to represent how she was ascended into heaven.
I’m not sure what that pillar thing is next to it, but I assume it’s a candle holder. It’s common for candles to be lit around idols of saints, but of course, it is also common for lit candles to be placed around photos of dead loved ones. Of course, it could be just a vase, in which flowers are placed around such pictures to show respect for saints or the deceased. But I’m more inclined to believe that the photo is religious, and not a family photo.
I’m not quite sure why it’s there. I’m going to take a very weak guess and assume Gregory turned to religion to cope with his insanity. Or perhaps he was raised in that religion?
@VRex: The most prominent branch of Christianity in England has been the Anglican Church for centuries, which is basically Catholicism lite. And in early 20th century it was definately more common to be overtly religious than not, and religious objects were commonplace. Usually the only book that a normal family owned was the Bible. A further hint that Gregory was not quite an average guy.
yea there is a photo of the wife or “woman” in the chapter “the gingerbread house” once you head to gregory’s study when wendy goes for his gun, theres a faded photo of gregory, joshua, and a woman. but the woman is really faded off the picture but you can still see a woman there >_>
dont think there’s much to it
Hello PokerNemesis,
I’m a big fan of this blog and RoR but I’ve never posted an idea here before.
This is off topic for the post, but what do you think of the idea of Wendy making up Stray Dog as a way to get Jennifer to become afraid of Brown?
Welcome, Kyra!
Kyra wrote:
I don’t think that idea works.
Here’s why. We can date Jennifer’s finding of Brown:

++++++++++++++++++++++
But Hoffman is aware of “stray dogs that kidnap small tots” stories being spread by the children well before Jennifer found Brown:

And Jennifer overheard Gregory telling his story about Stay Dog in June of the previous year. So I don’t think your hypothesis can possibly be true.
@PokerNemisis I would really appreciate it if the search engine for this site worked.
Thanks for the reminder, it will be a lot of work as I don’t think I can use the same theme if I update to the latest WordPress version, but I’ll see what happens.
mmkay
isn’t it absurd for stuff like this to be in the game ?
