I propose that the text of this page reads:

May 7

Our own secret flower garden, hidden behind the gingerbread house.

W

What bothers me about the reading I’ve proposed above is that it seems that the reading doesn’t give a proper sentence (unless we assume that there is something like an implied, “This is…”, that refers to the garden in the drawing). Does that mean the reading might be wrong? Do you see an alternative reading?

It’s interesting. I can never really tell at all what it says, until I read your interpretation. After that, when I look back at the picture it always looks to me like it says what your interpretation was. So either your interpretations of the picture is always spot on, or my mind just likes to believe whatever you say. Either way, I think your interpretation is right in this case. The girls always make spelling errors, I don’t see why they wouldn’t make grammatical errors like incomplete sentences.

It’s almost the same with me! I sometimes feel as if I have to conceive of a sensible reading (from word length, or something) before I can actually see the words fit the reading. I do think, immodestly, that I’m doing a pretty good job of figuring them out, so far.

I think she just refers to the place where they should meet, the particular point Into the place

    (same old problems with english…)

Looks to me like whoever wrote this was just labeling the picture. Since this is dated after when they agreed to meet, perhaps they went out the previous night and, while playing, found the garden. The next day, one of them drew a picture of it in the diary with an appropriate caption.
