I think there are a lot of Fatal Frame fans among my readers. So you may be interested to know that last night and early this morning I was playing Fatal Frame 4: Mask of the Lunar Eclipse, and loving it! And you can too!

Of course, you need to own, or be able to borrow, a Wii, which may be a problem for some Fatal Frame fans. But now, if you buy the Japanese version of FF4, there is a free (fan-made) patch that you can download that over-rides the region specificity of the game and gives English translations of virtually everything: not only of the spoken dialogue (here the English is subbed-in, not dubbed-in), but also of the documents, the in-game-tutorials, and the menu features (for all of these the Japanese is replaced by English). It works great, and the translation seems quite good.

You can get this free patch at http://zero4.higashinoeden.com/

I had previously tried playing the Japanese version of the game without being able to understand any of the documents (because I can’t read Japanese), and I found it very unsatisfying. The story is important in this game, and you really can’t understand the story if you can’t read the documents. And so I ended up leaving the game uncompleted. Now, however, with the translation patch, I’m finally able to understand the story, which is quite interesting, and I’m loving the game!

This 4th installment of the Fatal Frame series, like the others before it, continues the franchise’s tradition of ranking among the very scariest, and most atmospherically spooky, horror games of all time. Play it in the dark… if you dare! :D

I had already heard about this, but it’s still great news. I guess I have to import FF4 now. It’s so awesome that you don’t have to have homebrew on your wii to use this patch.

I like Fatal Frame so much~ unfortunately, I don’t own a Wii and I don’t have any friends who own one. T.T
I agree on Dave, I wish they make a PS3 version of it too… also a PSP version for portability. lol, horror in your pocket wherever you go! :D

FF4: Mask of the Lunar Eclipse, has some elements reminiscent of Rule of Rose.

The three young women protagonists in the game return to an abandoned hospital where they had lived as patients during their childhood. They have lost their memories of that time and place, and hope to remember, or otherwise discover, what had occurred there during their forgotten past. They meet the ghosts of that time, including ghosts of children that they knew. And sometimes, as they remember, these young women seemingly revert to the physical appearance of their childhood selves.

There is even a female enemy that drops down from the ceiling, as if hanging upside down, attacking somewhat like the Mermaid Boss of Rule of Rose does (but without having a vomit-attack).

I haven’t finished FF4 yet, but so far there have been 3 glitches that required a restart, so be sure to save frequently if you ever play the game.

All of the glitches related to doors:
    (1) A door “locked” behind me in a room with no other exits. This did not seem to be an intended part of the game-play. The room had been completed earlier, I only returned to it to check if there was an overlooked “cursed doll” to photograph (there wasn’t).
    (2) A door swiveled in the center, rather than by the hinged-end, and the character got stuck inside of the door itself while trying to enter the room. The door worked normally after a restart.
    (3) Panels oddly appeared that blocked a door, when it was opened, that wasn’t supposed to be blocked and, through which, one had to pass to further the game. A restart fixed the problem.

A friend of mine told me that unfixed glitches influenced the decision to not market the game in the U.S.

It is annoying to have to restart the game, yes, but fortunately I saved frequently, so the glitches didn’t cause me more than minor annoyance. I’ve still been greatly enjoying the game and the game-story.

Yes, I think it was Reggie Fils-Aime himself who gave that as the reason for not releasing it here in the US. I heard that Nintendo asked Tecmo (I think they’re the ones who do Fatal Frame) to fix the glitches, but they didn’t get around to doing it, so Nintendo never released it anywhere but Japan.

I think it’s a weak reason for not releasing. If glitches stopped me from playing games, then there’d be a ton of great games that I’d of never finished (Ocarina of Time comes to mind). Actually if that infinite food glitch hadn’t been there in Rule of Rose (I think it’s the Funeral chapter…) then I might not have finished the game the first time.

EDIT: oops, and here I thought I was gonna look all cool using quote brackets =) I guess I don’t really know how they work.

    @ LJ Bad,
For the quote ability: use > symbol-types instead of ] symbol-types, and use the word “blockquote” with and without / as you did.

Hmm… I never really thought of that as a glitch. It just seemed to me to be an opportunity one could exploit.

When I get around to editing and uploading Part 2 of my YouTube video on “The Clover Field” storybook (probably this weekend sometime) there will be a glitch to be seen, caught on camera, that I had never seen before and that was so WTF that I decided I must include it rather than edit it out.
