The exchange of letters between Wendy and Jennifer, while Jennifer was living in Gregory’s cellar, began with this letter from Wendy to Jennifer:
10 November
To Mr. Joshua, the bear in distress,
My name is Wendy. I always watch you from the sky. Mr. Joshua, why are you trapped down there?
(Found in the “Gingerbread House” chapter, inside of something that sort of looks like a cradle in the cellar bedroom.)
Wendy tells Jennifer, in the letter, “I always watch you from the sky.” The word “always” seems to me to convey the idea that Wendy had NOT just discovered Jennifer, but rather had discovered her some time earlier and then watched Jennifer regularly over a period of time WITHOUT ever making contact.
This always struck me as sort of creepy.
If jennifer arrived at Gregory’s house at the end of June 1929, that means that Jennifer had been living with Gregory for more than four months by the time of this letter. For how much of this time had Wendy been watching Jennifer before finally making contact?
Had Wendy been making visits to Gregory’s house even before Jennifer’s arrival?
Had Wendy been friends with the original Joshua, coming to the house to visit him?
Could it even be that the original “Joshua” had died earlier than June 1929 and that Wendy had actually been the “Joshua” of Gregory’s diary entries?
~
Consider this entry from Gregory’s diary:
“Thursday, June 19
Clear skies. More weeding. I wanted to take Joshua out with me to the fields, but his coughs were getting worse, so I had him stay in bed.”
(Found in the “Gingerbread House” chapter, in Gregory’s diary in the Study.)
Here Joshua is described as having “coughs” and is ill enough to be kept in bed. Throughout the game, we see that Wendy often coughs, and is often found in the Sick Room, bedridden. Could it be that the coughing, bedridden child of Gregory’s diary entry is actually Wendy? That the original Joshua was already dead, and Gregory already crazy (mistaking Wendy for Joshua), during the time of the diary entries (June 1929)?
If so, we might well wonder if Wendy had been watching Jennifer “from the sky” throughout the four months that Jennifer had been living in the cellar.
But why would Wendy do something like that?

Hehe I like this one (long time no see, by the way *winks*)
I believe that Wendy may have been curious on who this new child was (Jennifer). Why else would she watch so intently? Or maybe this is the first child that Gregory really kept for more than a week (peas reference) so maybe she was just curious? *nods*
I think ‘from the sky’ can either reference from the window in Jennifer’s room or as a symbol of the orphanage, whatever you’d like to call it ^^
Hope my ideas are good!

Hi Aya!

I’ll give my thoughts on the question of the meaning of “from the sky” in Part 2. But what is the connection you see that leads you to suggest it “as a symbol of the orphanage”?
I’m there, Aya!
She means that if Wendy WAS already the princess at this time, they were already playing “airship” at the orphanage… which would put her Above Jennifer, since Gregory’s house isn’t part of the airship!
vv() ^^^ that’s me…
That is an interesting idea that I had not considered before.
That’s what I was thinking too. ^_^
But is Wendy able to watch Jennifer from the orphanage (imagined as airship)?
If Jennifer regularly goes outside of the Gingerbread House, then perhaps Wendy COULD watch Jennifer from the orphanage (that is watch Jennifer from the airship). But if Wendy has to come from the orphanage to Gregory’s house to watch Jennifer, can Wendy still say “I always watch you from the sky” and have “from the sky” mean from the airship?
That’s a good point. It might just be that she pretends that the window is a window in the airship, even when no other part of the Gingerbread House is. Or maybe when she says watches… it means more like she’s just thinking about her from afar. Looking out the window and not actually seeing her, but maybe seeing the house and knowing she’s in there.
This makes me wonder, though… is the Rose Garden considered a part of the airship? If not, then when an orphan (mostly Wendy) leaves the orphanage grounds, is it like the airship has landed? That probably seems like a silly question, though. I guess it depends on just how deeply the imaginary world was a part of them. Was it still it in their mind if they left? Or were they just not playing at that moment?
Maybe I’m thinking too much. Apologies. ^_^
I can’t really remember, but is there anywhere in the game that definitively proves Gregory had a son to begin with? I know in the letter from the police to Martha it said something about him being seen with a boy of similar description to his son (or something along those lines) but maybe he has always been unstable and there never was a real Joshua. Just different children dressed as him.
But then again I can’t really remember much about the files found, and I’m sort of just rambling. lol
To Cherrona:
I think the best evidence on that subject is the photo that Jennifer can find on Gregory’s desk. But, as I started writing about the photo, I came to realize that there was enough to say about it that I should save it for a blog-post.
I already have tomorrow’s blog-post written (and I promised someone–two days ago–I’d post that in one or two days), so look for my blog-post about the photo to appear on the day after tomorrow.

I’ve proposed that the rickety shed might have been regarded as part of the airship. So, if that is true, in theory the rose garden could be part of the airship as well.
But I can’t think of any area of the airship that seems to me to be a transformation of the rose garden.

That proves my theory wrong then.
lol
hmmmm. (shrugs)
i always related it to the airship
Thank you Masq for evaluating on my idea, that was my exact thought! I’m sorry I couldn’t respond earlier, I was at school ^^; Glad you share the idea, and glad that you like it too, PokerNemesis! We’re glad to help out anytime

i would think that the real joshua got sick and died (gregory’s diary.)
i mean why else would he not be around?
He may have died from falling off a swing (internal injuries) or something of the like.
But I think the main issue of this post isn’t that he did or didn’t die or that he should still be around.
Welcome, mella!
On the idea that the original Joshua might have died from a swing accident, see the comments thread of my blog-post:
