<blockquote>It is interesting to consider whether Stray-Dog-related fears, among the orphans, might have been able to be transformed into a fear of Brown, and if that might be one reason why Wendy relished telling scary tales of Stray Dog.</blockquote>

Heh, the whole Stray Dog thing kind of reminds me of when I was little. My friend and I used to scare ourselves silly with stories about our made up bogeyman (his name was "Old Suitcase" o.o;) I adore how well the game captures little girl mentality. lol Old Suitcase was based loosely around a tramp we used to see... if memory serves...

The SH2 dog ending is hilarious. :p Well... no, not really... it's more just random and weird :P

Choco-chan:
<blockquote>Maybe, as Ayame mentioned, Wendy told a lie to get the other orphans to kill Brown. Perhaps she told them that Brown was Stray Dog?</blockquote>

Before I began this Rule of Rose Mysteries blog, I wrote a series of ROR theories under the heading "Darkest Case Scenario", on a now-defunct Rule of Rose forum. The thematic idea of these theories was to present theories involving evil versions of various characters. These theories were not always meant to be taken seriously. One such theory was an evil-Brown theory.

The evil-Brown theory was inspired, at least somewhat, by the "dog-ending" of Silent Hill 2.

The evil-Brown theory heaped the responsibility for most of the bad occurrences in the Rule of Rose upon the deliberately evil actions of Brown.

In that evil-Brown theory, I made much of the fact that Brown is the only ACTUAL stray dog shown to us in the game. I proposed that Brown faked his death, using broken dog-dolls to deceive the very silly Jennifer, in order to precipitate the carnage that followed. It is because Brown faked his death that he was able to mysteriously "return to life" in the Stray Dog and the Lying Princess chapter.

On a more serious note...

We are shown the Stray Dog drawings on the Orphanage walls, and find Brown's dog collar, in the first chapter of the game; we find Brown tied up, and hanging upside-down, in the second chapter. As these are the only dog-related events up until that point, the player is undoubtedly meant---by the game author(s)---to wonder if Brown and the Stray Dog drawings might be connected.

It is interesting to consider whether Stray-Dog-related fears, among the orphans, might have been able to be transformed into a fear of Brown, and if that might be one reason why Wendy relished telling scary tales of Stray Dog.

I had a sort of odd idea recently about how Wendy may have had Brown killed. But I'm not entirely sure. I didn't think it through too much, I'll admit that much right now.

Maybe, as Ayame mentioned, Wendy told a lie to get the other orphans to kill Brown. Perhaps she told them that Brown was Stray Dog? It would seem pretty epic and heroic of her if she had managed to capture wild Stray Dog so that he can be killed for the safety of everyone there.

There's more than a few problems with this though.

1.) If Wendy became Princess because she had information and thus the ability to protect the others from Stray Dog, killing him would leave the orphans with no reason to let someone physically weaker than them continue to rule them.

2.) The other orphans might have known about Brown being Jennifer's dog beforehand, and thus not believe that he was Stray Dog. Unless Wendy told some more lies, but I can't think of any evidence to support that.

3.) There's the theory about Brown possibly being only a doll. If that is true, I think the orphans would find it ridiculous that a stuffed dirty dog doll could be capable of killing/eating them, and Wendy trying to reveal such a thing to them as the truth would cast more suspicion on her. Possibly on her sanity, too. XD

4.) In Meg's journal, she says that the Princess of the Rose describes Stray Dog as "cleanly"; when on many occasions Wendy refers to Brown as "filthy".

XP Just getting that out of my head so I can focus more on some other ideas I had. >.>

I have one question about the storybook that isn't addressed in the chapter either...

WHERE ARE THE BOYS!?

They aren't included in ANY of the storybooks... but we know they died too, however I didn't see their clothes outside... which is why I wondered if maybe Thomas, Xavier and Nicholas were cornered inside...

<blockquote>Stray Dog had been a grave threat to the orphans, but Wendy, their Princess, out of her great love for her subjects, had braved terrific danger to be their savior and tame Stray Dog! Might this not have been the story that Wendy wanted to be able to tell to the others?</blockquote>

Yes, I think this is true too. And it works better with the storybook this way than if Wendy maliciously brought Stray Dog to kill everyone. (Plus, as you know, I hope that Wendy was better than that.) Have we seen any other place where the storybook doesn't match the content of the chapter? It just seems as if it's trying to tell you the truth of what happened.

I believe that Wendy is wearing the dress that Amanda was sewing in the "Rag Princess Sews" chapter. And I believe that the dress is a copy (only larger) of the dress that we saw earlier on the Little Princess Doll. That doll used to be Jennifer's doll (according to "The Little Princess" storybook). I think that the dress indicates that a) Wendy is the Princess, and b) Wendy is offering herself to Jennifer as a replacement for both the Little Princess Doll and for Brown.

As I wrote in my blog-post "<a href="http://ruleofrosemysteries.com/2007/11/21/mysteries/the-cell-of-bliss-mystery-part-2/#more-40" rel="nofollow">The Cell of Bliss Mystery (Part 2)</a>":

<blockquote>Wendy, presenting herself to Jennifer in the newly-made “Little Princess” gown (which was the secret-thing that Amanda told Jennifer she was sewing as a surprise for Jennifer, which in a sense it was), was presenting herself to Jennifer like a bride.</blockquote>

I have some comments/questions not directly related to this discussion, but they are about the cutscene being discussed, Jennifer rebels against the Aristocrats (link at the top of the page).

Just made a few observations about clothing in regards to Wendy...in this scene, Wendy is dressed very nicely. All the other orphan girls seem to have pretty plain, utilitarian dresses. Wendy's other dress, that she's usually seen in, is plainer, but still more elaborate than most of the others' dresses. Just wondering if this implies a similar past for Wendy to that of Jennifer. I mean, for Jennifer to have been on the maiden voyage of a very luxurious airship, her parents must have been fairly wealthy. Maybe Wendy had come from a family with some money as well, bringing nice clothing with her. And for the clothes to still fit, she couldn't have been at the orphanage for TOO long. Interesting that no one else in her family wanted her once her parents died, but that's another subject entirely :-)

Just a funny little thing I noticed: when Jennifer enters the Aristocrat room (in this whole chapter as a matter of fact), her knee socks are missing. But when Wendy is standing in front of her, and Jennifer is told that Brown is in the bag and its too late, the camera shows her balling up her fist. Her fist is shown next to her ankles and her dark socks are back! At first I thought maybe her leg was in shadow, but her fist is practically ON her leg and so you can see what flesh in shadow looks like; her leg is definitely navy blue...of course, when she becomes child Jennifer, she is wearing white knee socks.

One last thought about the socks: maybe they were gone because Jennifer was considering herself too old for the Aristocrat games? She had said how she felt like the only grown up and adults CERTAINLY don't wear knee socks...maybe this was the point where she really saw the orphans for what they were (because of what they'd done to Brown) and the disapperance of the socks was symbollic. That could also explain the return of the socks, to show that she actually WAS a child when she confronted Wendy and that this part of Jennifer's "dream" should be taken as true events from her past.

I dont know if my post will be read, since this entry was made so long ago---
Anyway, in the last chapter, once upon a time, when the lil' Jen goes into the classroom, we see that they were being taught about different types of goverment, that really caught my attention.. as I linked it to the whole authority based game the children were "playing" and probably, Wendy must have learnt that one way to keep her people under her power is through fear, as have many dictatorships done in the past; so in that way, making up a story of an evil creauture that devours children made it perfect to keep them all working under her command.
