In the first airship chapter of Rule of Rose, “The Unlucky Cloverfield”, one can find two drawings posted up on the wall of the Sick Room.

The drawing on top is a drawing of a rabbit. We will discuss it in a later blog-post.

For the drawing on the bottom, pressing “x” gives the following narration text: “It’s a drawing of a large flying fish.” Pressing “x” again gives this additional narration text: “There’s also a cute picture of children playing happily together.

The second narration text seems to be poorly translated. The words “There’s also a cute picture of…” imply that there are two pictures being referred to, but in fact both narration texts describe the same picture.

You can get a good look at this bottom picture that is on the Sick Room wall by looking in the Rule of Rose handbook that comes with the DVD: p.29 (the first page of chapter 4).

The drawing shows seven children, three children riding on top of the blue flying fish with their arms raised in joy (it seems to me), and four children on the ground holding a tether-rope that is attached to the bottom of the fish.

It is this same drawing, that we see Wendy drawing in the dirt of the front yard of the orphanage during the first (“The Little Princess”) chapter and the last (“Once Upon a Time”) chapter of the game.

What is the significance of this drawing, that the game’s authors place it at both the beginning and the end of the game (and also allow us three opportunities to see it during the airship chapters)? I’ll try to answer that in this post.
