This is an arrangement of the dated documents of Rule of Rose as a time-line, from the earliest document to the ones just prior to Jennifer’s arrival at the orphanage.

This is the time period between 25 April 1929 and 2 March 1930.

The GamesSpot/GameFAQs gamescript faq incorrectly claims that the letter exchange between Jennifer and Wendy began in 1928 (and declares, based on this incorrect date, that the “Joshua” of Gregory’s diary entries must be Jennifer). Although the dates on the letters exchanged between Jennifer and Wendy don’t mention the year, these letters could not possibly date from 1928 as Jennifer was living in the cellar of Gregory’s house when the correspondence began, but the airship that Jennifer flew on, and that crashed, killing Jennifer’s parents and resulting in Jennifer being rescued by Gregory, didn’t take flight until 1929. Therefore, Jennifer was not at Gregory’s house in 1928 and Jennifer was not exchanging letters with Wendy in 1928.

The first document of the time-line, by the way, is one that was overlooked in the GameSpot/GameFAQs game-script faq.

If I have made any errors, or have left out a document that should be here, please let me know in the “comments”.

The World’s Largest Airship to Take Flight

In anticipation of the coming era of airship travel, Britain announced the completion of the world’s largest airship. In its long awaited first flight, it will lift off at Cardington and fly to India by way of London. All of Britain eagerly awaits the inaugural ceremony. Along with the Mayor and the Countess, children from the local orphanage will participate in the ribbon-cutting ceremony.

    PLOT HOLE?
I wanted to ask about this. As the sole survivor of the airship crash, Jennifer was taken to the orphanage by the officer Dolittle (according to Jennifer). How is it that she was living in Gregory’s house, a complete strange? I mean, between the crash and her life in the orphanage, what was the time when that happened?

  2. PokerNemesis says:

Yuzo-kun, you are thinking of this comment by Jennifer (“Once Upon a Time” chapter, at the front gate):

“That day, I was escorted from the scene by Officer Doolittle. At first, it was reported that there were no survivors… Then, word got out that, miraculously, I had escaped the tragedy… When rumor spread that I was also the sole survivor of a horrific airship accident in which the passengers were all presumed to be dead, the media went into a frenzy.”

Jennifer is speaking of being escorted from the scene of the orphanage massacre by Officer Doolittle. She isn’t speaking of how she got to Gregory’s house after the airship crash. We don’t know how that occurred, except that somehow Gregory “saved” Jennifer.

Jennifer escaped death twice. What makes her the “unlucky, wretched girl” everyone makes her out to be?

It is the narrator who always calls Jennifer an unlucky girl.

If Jennifer IS dreaming, then the narrator of the story is an aspect of her own mind: so it is Jennifer herself who thinks she is unlucky.

It is interesting to note that Jennifer regards EVERY orphan as being a prince or princess EXCEPT herself. She is just “the unlucky girl”. And Jennifer never refers to ANYONE by their Aristocrat Club rank.

—I was wondering, how long did Gregory “keep” Jennifer?—

We don’t know for sure when she arrived at Gregory’s, but we have a good idea when she left Gregory’s: 28 January 1930.

I would think, judging from the date of the airship crash (see the post “When Did the Airship Crash?“), and considering no mention of Jennifer’s arrival in Gregory’s diary, that Jennifer most likely arrived at Gregory’s very shortly after 27 June 1929.

    So I’d say 7 months.

  9. No One says:

I still don’t understand completely, even after finishing on the “puppy in shed” ending. So like how was Gregory responsible for the deaths of the children, did he really “gobble” them up, or did he do something that caused the airship to crash? I know Wendy said “you’ll be sorry” to Jennifer and she was training Gregory to be a stray dog, but I’m still confused.

  10. Sion Barzahd says:

In fact, i think that jennifer fleed Gregory’s house with Wendy, then was brought to the orphanage by Dolittle, In that time, the police was investigating of joshua’s disappear, he died, then Gregory buried him in the backyard ( as seen in the unused cutscene ), Jennifer was treated like Joshua for a time, then, she fled his house, and begun her life in the orphanage, there, she kept her days playing the red rose games, when she met Brown, Wendy became jealous and ordered to slaughter Brown (this a point that i don’t quite understand), then Jennifer spanked Wendy, the girls lost their likeness to Wendy and Jennifer was made their new princess.
Waging for vengeance, Wendy took advantage of Gregory’s weak mind ( by disguising herself into Joshua ) and trained him as the stray dog, she made him murder the girls, then, she felt sorry, and wanted finish the crap she done by giving Jennifer the gun, and finish Gregory’s misery.
Just a question… , was all the children at the orphanage really dead? because Wendy may have survived the massacre.
She was disguised as Joshua, and Gregory just took her inside.

  15. SPF says:

    Thanks for this great site!

I’m sorry to dig up this old entry, but I wanted to ask something. I always assumed the children that disappeared from town had been taken by Gregory because he needed them to make up for his dead son before he rescued (well) Jennifer.

Looking at the dates here, I see that it doesn’t really make sense that way. ???

    “Thursday, June 19

Clear skies. More weeding. I wanted to take Joshua out with me to the fields, but his coughs were getting worse, so I had him stay in bed.”

This would indicate Joshua was still alive but already being sick.

    “21 June 1929

    Another Unexplained Disappearance

There has been another mysterious disappearance of a child recently. Following missing children reports on the 7th and 14th, police are now investigating this case as both a possible kidnapping and a missing person.

Local residents are advised not to allow children outside unsupervised and to take caution around any suspicious individuals.”

According to this, a few kids were missing already. Then Gregory couldn’t have been responsible for it if Joshuy was still alive. On the 7th, he did write he wanted to go to town the next day (so he obviously didn’t go there on the 7th) and he also didn’t mention town on the 14th. So, if he hadn’t been to town on those dates, how could he have kidnapped the children?

On the other hand, he mentions planting peas underground on two of the three days a child disappeared, so could it be that “planting peas” really means burrying those kids? This would make sense if the sick Joshua he mentioned were actually those children and he was making up their sickness in order to explain to himself why the boy wasn’t there with him on the field. “Oh, right, he’s staying inside today.” Also, because he remembered the real Joshua as a sickly child. Or could “planting peas underground” refer to locking them up in the cellar room?

It’s also noteworthy that the first time he mentions something positive about Joshua is June 23, he likes the story and smiles. Evidently, this is really Jennifer. The other substitute Joshuas were struggling, trying to flee, obviously not happy, so he saw them as sick and also needed reasons to keep them in the house. (Sickness, being punished for disobedience.) Because they wouldn’t accept their role and it probably became to much of an issue to keep those kids captive, he had to kill them and get a new one until he had Jennifer who most likely didn’t refuse to play that role because he rescued her, she felt sorry for him, ahd no home (or memories) anyways and was, as we learn in the story, too weak back then to defend herself (emotionally).

Another explanation might be, that the diary entries actually DID refer to the real Joshua, but are one (or more?) year older than the newspaper article. They don’t mention the day of the week, just the date. So it could be that after almost a year (or more time) of suffering and sadness with the “anniversary” of his boy’s death drawing near, he started to imagine the kid was still alive and kidnapped children from the town as substitutes, resulting in the newspaper article. This would also explain why his diary doesn’t mention having gone to town on the days the kids were kidnapped, because that diary is not from the same year.

Now I don’t know if this makes much sense and I wrote a bit “streaming out of my mind” without structurizing everything, but did I make clear where my confusion came from and how I think it could all be explained? (If anyone’s still reading this.^^)

The date of the 23rd is very close to the child disappearance report of the 21st. This seems awkward for the suggestion that the Joshua of the 23rd is Jennifer, but I’ll give it some more thought.

  21. SPF says:

Yeah, I’m really not sure any longer I did understand what was up with Gregory and the missing children. So what I wrote here are really just suggestions, as I’m not sure it all fits the timeline and so on. I wanted to write something in the Cannibalism entry comments earlier today, but the internet connection was gone and I didn’t think of copying it. I’ll see if I can rephrase my thoughts there.^^ Anyhow, I’m currently replaying RoR and want to pay more attention to the “sidestories”.

Well, it has been a long time since I’ve played RoR, but I can remember that I have had the same idea at that time of playing RoR. It’s the most plausible explanation that the Josuha referring to the June 23 is Jennifer:

    1. June 23 is the first day Joshua is described being happy due to the fact that Jennifer accepts being Joshua. The other kids didn’t.

    2. The airship had been missed (according to the newspaper article on June 23) and most likely crashed on June 22.

    3. The kid being missed according to the newspaper article on June 21 (so you have to take into consideration that the action had already happened the day before on June 20) was “planted in the ground” by Greg on the same day. So, meanwhile (June 21 till 23) Greg had to take a look for a new Joshua.

Notable is also that Greg is writing on June 22 that he is “going to take a day off from the fields and concentrate on refining”. So there ARE indications how Jennifer met Greg. This leads me to the conclusion that it’s quite possible that he was very close to the site of the airship crash (note also that he described June 22, the day the air ship crashed due to foul weather, as “cloudy” whereas the days before and after were sunny). There, he “saved” Jennifer and picked her up. This would also explain why Jennifer accepted the role of Joshua:
She considered him to be her savior in a certain way, being the first person after surviving the crash, prolly she feels that she is in his debt. Both seem to be lonely persons since they lost their loved ones, so you can say that this relationship is kind of symbiotic. That’s why she has no problem of being Joshua – at least at the beginning of this affair.

    (“Gingerbread House”, Study, Gregory’s diary)

Clear Sky => Heavy thunder and rain

Does anybody see the contradiction in there? If the search party can’t seem to find the airship because of the bad weather, then it means that the airship was nowhere near Gregory’s house. Howerver, never does he mention going away from home, neather this day, or any day after. And if the crash was not near his home, what buisness did Gregory have to go anywhere near the place the airship crashed? It seems to me that Gregory put so much enphasis on the weather that this contradiction can’t be without meaning.

Could it be that the diary is simply from another year than the one of the crash, like it was proposed? Or could it be that Gregory made it all the way to the area where the crash was only to find Jennifer? But in that case, how could he have expected to find her?

Another explanation could simply be that the airship crashed on June 22, when Gregory noted that it was cloudy and that the search team realy underestimated how far the airship had drifted away, so they were looking in the bad weather area instead of the one where Gregory was, which was only cloudy.

    Those are only ideas…

Could be a possibility, but you don’t have to think outside the box when you pay attention to the tense of the diary entry on June 22. Look carefully: “Cloudy. I thought of a good idea for a story. I’m GOING TO take a day off from the fields and concentrate on refining it.” Got it? Most likely he wrote the diary entry at the BEGINNING of the day. Thus you can say it’s not really an ordinary diary entry written at the end of the day – it’s rather a daily routine that he takes down. So if it is cloudy in the morning, why couldn’t it be rainy and stormy during the course of the day? We all know how English weather can change within minutes. So this leads again to the theory that the air ship crashed close next to him.

    Just my 2 cents though.

  28. Does Gregory selling peas and whatnot have anything to do with that song Eleanor,Diana, and Meg were singing in the cutscene where Jennifer was promoted?

  29. PokerNemesis says:

They sing “Stray Dog must have his peas”, so there seems to be some sort of connection, yes.

I’ve been raking through TheSinnerChorno’s gamescript all day, piecing together what I can. I’m going to have to play the game over if I want to be 100% certain since some of the errors in that script are too huge to figure out. Based off what I’ve gotten from his script, Martha died after Hoffman decided to leave.

    [Hoffman's Diary]
    11 November 1930
    I’m leaving the orphanage.

Clara’s here to look after things, and the children are quickly growing up.
I’ve done right and fulfilled my duty.

…Bloody hell! All the trouble started when that wretched child arrived…
I’ve done nothing to deserve this!

…That’s the end of the diary. We never saw Mr. Hoffman again.

    [Martha's Letter]
    24 November
    Officer Dolittle,

My name is Martha Carol, and I work at the Rose Garden Orphanage. In the past
month, I have sent six letters to your attention, but have yet to receive a
response. Have my letters reached you? I ask that you please investigate this
matter at once for the safety of our children.

Yesterday, I saw them together again… Mr. Wilson and Wendy, a child at our
orphanage. I am very concerned for her safety. The two of them have been acting
quite strangely. Oh, it’s terribly odd… By strangely, I mean..

Mr. Wilson walking on all fours and nodding… and Wendy appears to be scolding
him… I don’t know how to explain it, except that it resembled dog training
gone wrong. Ooo… it gives me the shivers just thinking about it. Please come
    investigate this matter as–

Also, January comes between October and November.

    6 October From J to W
    You’ve got it all wrong…

    31 January From W to J
    My dear Prince,
    Yes, you are my Prince…

    28 November From W to J
You still have that filthy dog?…

Also, the months you play through have NOTHING to do with documented months. Sir Peter wasn’t even supposed to be around until July when Brown was found, but gamescript bucketknight clues indicate the Sir Peter chapter was in May.

In the “Once Upon A Time” chapter, Jennifer tells us (at the portrait of Hoffman in the foyer): “One day, Mr. Hoffman suddenly disappeared. Clara and Miss Martha soon followed, leaving me and the other orphans alone.”

“NOTHING to do with” is a bit of an overstatement, I think. Usually there is at least some tiny connection somewhere that can be found. But I agree that the months ascribed to chapters are not, as a rule, reliable indicators of how to date elements within the chapter with regard to Jennifer’s forgotten past.

  32. Lexzl says:

I suppose I was a bit biased in thinking Martha died before Hoffman. Though I really wish the chapters’ months were all canonical, especially since “The Little Princess” Chapter begins in March which is when Jennifer arrives. On another note I thought this was fairly clever: The final lines of “A Love Suicide”

‘Cause love itself is… just as innocent as roses in May.
And it’s pure white… just like sin.

Prior to June 1929 everything was fine and Jennifer’s life was unsullied by Gregory and the Aristocrats.
